The New Zealand boat builder Formula Cruisers fits IPS into their 42 footer "Icon". The Icon 42 with traditional inboard was released earlier this year and since then many customers have requested a pod version.
"We have had strong interest in the 42 since we released it earlier this year, with large numbers of people asking if we could fit pod drives into the boat. After working with Volvo Penta to confirm the suitability of the hull design for the IPS system and seeing the resulting fuel efficiency numbers, the IPS decision was an easy one for us to make" says Troy Woods, Formula's Sales and Marketing Manager. "
"The 40 ft market has always been popular and the 42 IPS has been designed to appeal to both the family cruising and serious sports fishing enthusiast and offers significant advantages to both in terms of space and versatility" says Woods.
Powered by twin Volvo IPS500, the 42 will have a speed of 31 kts with comfortable cruising from 20 – 24 kts. Not to be overlooked is the excellent fuel efficiency of the IPS system with the ICON 42 having a range of over 400 nm at 21+ kts.
