Before you head out for the day on the water, be sure to check your local weather forcast. It is important to remember that wind and wave conditions can and often do vary somewhat from predicted levels.
When Heading into open waters monitor your local marine rescue channels for up to date weather reports in your waters.
Boat Safety Gear
Is your safety gear in good condition, distress flares and emergency beacons have a prescribed expirey date.Check your safety gear packaging for details of these dates. Torch Batteries should be changed regularly and tested for operation. Lifejackets should be inspected for signs of wear and damage resulting from storage movement.

When should distress beacon batteries be replaced?
Distress beacon batteries will need to be checked for replaced prior to the replacement date shown on the expiry label.Having your beacon battery changed will ensre that in the event that the beacon is activated it will continue to function for the maximum period of time.
Return your beacon to the manufacturer or retail agent for replacement.

The Volunteer Marine Rescue Association Queensland has 25 affiliate squadrons located throughout Queensland from Pt Danger on the southern QLD border to the Gulf Of Carpenteria, providing search and rescue services on a volunteer basis.To join Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland, either as an operational member or to obtain Water Asssistance cover you should join the Squadron nearest to you or the Squadron nearest to where you normally launch or store your vessel.
121.5 MHz distress beacons are no longer detected by satellite.You MUST switch to a 406 MHz distress beacon as soon as possible.Do not risk your life by relying on a 121.5 MHz distress beacon.
